Solid Swell On Day One Gets The Quiksilver Open Lakeys
Presented by the Coca-Cola ISC Tour Off To A Pumping Start
1 July 2008, Dompu-Sumbawa: A solid 6 foot swell greeted the contestants and contest crew early Tuesday morning, giving the first day of the Quiksilver Open Lakeys presented by the Coca-Cola ISC Tour a massive jumpstart to what is shaping up to be an epic event here at the world class venue of Lakey Peak in the Regency of Dompu, Sumbawa.
Rounds One and Two were completed by 1:20 pm when the low tide, coupled with the sizable swell, had Contest Director Bunga call the action to a halt for the day. Lakey Peak is known to extract some serious tolls for giving up its low tide super hollow barrels, so with only the first day of competition at hand, no sense in tempting fate.
The field of 60 competitors from Bali, Java, Sumatra, and Sumbawa were amping to get out and tackle the big sets launching themselves upon the razor sharp reef, going for glory and fame, so the first boat ferried the first competitors out to the lineup at 8 am at the peak of high tide.
Round One finished up by 10:15, with local knowledge seeing Gazali Hamzah, Ahmad Hussein “Saddam”, Tahe, Ornot, Muhlis Jafar, and Iwan, all from Lakey Peak , advancing to Round Two. Other heat winners included Tia Nustawan and Agus Frimanto from Nusa Lembongan, and Di Randi Dinar and Ida Bagus Simarai from Kuta.
The wind had started to create some lumps and bumps on the still pumping 5 foot waves by the start of Round Two, making waves selection a bit more critical and two sticky feet the critical component to getting into a good scoring position.
In Heat One local Sammy Samsudin mounted a last minute charge to take the heat win over Kuta's Mickey Sudena. Heat Two saw Wayan “Kopling” Wirtama (Kuta) leave no lip unsmashed in his race to the lead, which he never relinquished. The battle for second between Dylan Amar (Legian) and Dede Suryana (Java) saw an unlucky Dede in third spot at the horn, as he just couldn't seem to find a wave that would give him a good scoring opportunity.
Made Lana from Uluwatu, charging on his backhand, quickly had Heat Three well in hand. Herman from Medewi was consistent on his forehand, racking up enough points to put him solidly in second, but no threat to the masterful Made Lana. Agus Frimanto continued his fluid surfing with another first place finish in Heat Four, with local Dedi “Gun” Satriadin giving him a good chase but having to settle for second when the horn stopped the clock.
In Heat 5 Made Awan from Serangan (last ISC event's winner) had a bit of trouble in his first couple of waves but soon figured it out and ripped a couple of big hacks off the top to jump into the lead. Lembongan's Agus Purnawan gave chase and was only a few points short of overtaking Awan when Awan locked into another with two minutes remaining to seal his win.
During Heat Six the wind would blow with a vengeance for a few minutes then disappear, only to reappear again a few minutes later. There were still some sizable 5-6 foot sets coming in as the tide was going out, and the reef starting to dry out in front of the tower, with white caps whipping around on the outside. Local Saddam dropped and weaved his way into the lead, but Lembongan's Putra Hermawan gave chase and soon took over, only to be knocked off by the last minute charge of Mohamad Yunus from Legian, who was in last place for most of the heat but found a nicely lined up wave and smashed it all the way to the inside for the heat win.
Kuta's Marlon Gerber started off in first place with his first wave score and was never seriously threatened on his way to his heat win. Nyoman Maika looked to be comfortably in second spot but was knocked out by Antonius Dakhi from Nias, who found a longish wave in the final minutes to post a good enough score to advance.
The tide was very low and the waves were really sucking up off the bottom for the final heat of the day. Very few waves were ridden, as the almost dry reef was intimidating to say the least. Ribut Wayudi from Kuta survived his first wave to get the lead, and Febri (who by his own admission was just trying to survive also) come in second though sacrificing a little skin to the reef as payment.
Second Day action will get started at 7:30 am tomorrow with Round 3. Top ranked ISC surfers including Lee Wilson, Pepen Hendrik, Wayan “Betet” Merta, Made “Bol” Adi Putra, Tipi Jabrik, and Ketut “Mega' Semadhi are among the contestants that will be battling it out for a place in Round 4. They are all very well aware that the next ISC event, the Rip Curl Cup, has only 32 spots available, and those spots are reserved for the top 32 ranked surfers from the first three ISC events of the 2008 season. And this is the third one, so it's a biggie!
The swell expected to decrease a bit in size but become cleaner and less bumpy, so we are looking forward to some more exciting action here at Lakey Peak . Stay tuned!
The Quiksilver Open Lakeys Presented by the Coca-Cola ISC Tour would also like to thank the Regency of Dompu, Merpati Airlines, DC Shoes, the Aman Gati Hotel, SurfTime, and Surf Travel Online for their support for this event.
